jOB SHADOW NARRATIVE
Job Shadow Narrative
On September 8, 2016 at 2;30pm. I Went to Sequoia Family Medical Center to Job Shadow Dr. Lananh Nguyen, She is a Psychologist. She Is located at 590 W. Putnam Avenue, Porterville CA. 93257. Why I chose to interview her is to understand what it’s like to be a psychologist.
First of all the Job Shadow was the length of about half an hour. Why it was so short because Dr. Lananh Nguyen had a busy schedule that day, but managed to spare half an hour of her time for me to do the shadow. I Austin Harris had asked Dr. Nguyen up to twelve questions about her career in her being a psychologist and how she achieved this goal. I’ll tell you a few major ones I asked. I asked, “What training or education is required for this type of work?” She responded you need to have a doctoral degree in psychology for 4 years after a bachelor’s degree”. Then I asked her another question saying, “What inspired you to choose your career?’ she replied, “Several things “The orange clockwork” watched in psychology class in high school captured my interest in abnormal human behaviors. Then the second thing continued in school “college” is say a lot of homeless people had become mentally ill on how to solve that problem by decreasing homeless people with mental illness. The third thing is I had many professors in college who were psychologist who explained the subject matter in an interesting way”. Also asked, “How did you get started in this field?”
She explained; “Got my bachelor’s degree and I took the GRE and applied to graduate school, then I go to different interviews at schools who are interested in me and I choose which school I want to attend, so that’s how I got accepted to all, in the end I went through 5 years of doctor level education, then I did an internship, then after that I got my doctoral degree, then I had to take two different test but before I had to encored fifteen hundred house of postdoc hours then I two test for licensure to practice and after that I am required to take at least 36 hours of continued education every two years”. Other one I asked was “What school(s) did you attend? Are there any schools you recommend?” “UC Berkeley, University of Oregon and yes I would recommend both schools”, she suggested.
What I liked about this experience about shadowing Dr. Nguyen was how much is required to pursue this career in being a psychologist, to be at a level as Dr. Nguyen requires a lot of schooling. What I’d also like to know is how the human brain functions when endured under a lot of questions or pressure of some kind, how people think, how people act on a daily basis. What I didn’t like about it is the limited time I had to shadow her.
In conclusion, yes I am still interested in this job because there is still a lot of things I’d like to understand about how the human brain functions. What makes it control our lives on how we think and make decisions? There are a lot of things I’d like to know about in this line of career.
